Assignments Highlighting my growth and projects as a Media Scholar.

Fall 2019 - Media DiaryThis project was a reflection of my media usage, and it put into perspective just how dependent myself, and many other people are on technology and media today. This was over a year ago, and my media usage was already incredibly high. It would be interesting to do this again today, after the quarantine and election to see how much screen time I have daily for both my computer and my phone. It is most likely 13 a day, which is both horrifying and sadly required to keep in the loop and fulfill my duties as a student.

Spring 2020 - How does media "do good?"This project was one where I had free reign to choose something that I wanted to do, so I created a Twitter page that doubled as a quarantine survival guide. It was really fun because I got to flex my creative muscles a bit, as well as fulfill the guidelines my own way. More importantly, it is the one assignment that sticks with me from the early stages of quarantine earlier this year. 2020, in short, has sucked. From the tragic deaths of beloved public figures, to the troubling social issues of our time, to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown, it has truly been a trying year. This assignment was a fun way to escape the overwhelming reality of our situation, and I hope it helped even one person find a way to deal with a truly unprecedented time.

Fall 2020 - Deconstructing the Nightly News
This assignment was not a large-scale project or end-of-semester grade like
the other two, but rather a weekly activity. Despite that, the meaningfulness of the assignment is something that has stuck with me. It was a discussion of news values and ones that have taken the centerstage in today's media and society. To me, understanding the values explored in this assignment put things in a new perspective for me. I realized how important things such as important people, countries, continuity, and negativity have become in the news media, and how things like unambiguity and unexpectedness have fallen to the wayside. More than anything, however, I began to fully grasp just how much money and clicks are important, even if it comes at the expense of quality coverage and facts. I knew this to an extent before, but this assignment made it much more apparent to me. Link: docs.google.com/document/d/1IQ2A9DHgFeUgob0XWUYOKOJwKjAW1hFKtrvcmrrCyZo/edit?usp=sharing |
Spring 2021 - Research Presentation
This final assignment was a culmination of a semester's work that was all dedicated towards one, overarching topic. My topic was COVID-19, social media usage, and mental health outcomes in the college-aged population. This required a lot of research, hard work, and learning on the fly given that I had zero research experience (in terms of conducting my own and putting together a presentation). I conducted my own survey for the first time, and I doubt it will be the last time. This assignment really represents the hard work and effort that has gone into this semester for me, and the topic is fitting given that the light at the end of the tunnel is visible for the pandemic.
